\"6181100\"<\/a>The Ottoman Studies Group at Oxford (OSGO), in cooperation with Ertegun House, is delighted to announce that its third graduate workshop will be held at the University of Oxford on June 5, 2015. The workshop aims to bring together an international and multidisciplinary group of scholars to explore the neglected histories of the late Ottoman past.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s workshop will focus on the idea of \u2018margins\u2019 \u2014 on the stories and voices that have been sidelined or erased from the historiography of the late Ottoman Empire. Canonical readings of the period, derived from both Ottoman and early Republican histories, continue to inform present-day scholarship and also popular understanding of the last decades of the Empire. In these official accounts, groups, currents and event that were considered marginal were written out of the national picture. These untold stories have gradually been re-excavated in the last three decades, as new angles, methods and sources have altered the perception of a monolithic late Ottoman milieu. This workshop will seek to draw on the findings of this revisionist scholarship, in the hope of contributing to a more complex and nuanced history of the late Ottoman Empire.<\/p>\n

We particularly welcome papers that attempt to give voice to those ignored or silenced by official historiographies; that explore the political and ideological motors of marginalisation; that reflect on this period as a case study in nationalist history-writing; that offer alternatives to such official accounts; and, indeed, that question the very notion of historical marginality itself. We are especially interested to hear from scholars working on the following topics:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Neglected religious, cultural and gender identities
\n\u00b7 Peripheral areas of the Empire
\n\u00b7 Social outcasts
\n\u00b7 Theoretical discussions of canon formation (including the writing of art history, architectural history, literary history,
\narchaeology, visualisation of history)
\n\u00b7 Methodological questions (sources, methods of marginalisation, alternative historiographical approaches)<\/p>\n

Accepted participants will be informed by May 1, 2015<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
